Congressmen Visit Trump Tower, Ask President To Protect Midterms
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRRADIO) — A pair of democratic congressmen gathered outside of Trump Tower Sunday morning to send a message to the President: protect the upcoming midterm elections.
“Voting rights, the engine of so much of our progress as a nation, are under siege,” said Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-IL, who said America’s democracy is facing two types of threats: domestic and foreign.
“Numerous officials have publicly spoken out about Russian interference,” Krishnamoorthi told reporters. “Despite President Trump’s refusal to acknowledge this threat, it is for real. Stopping hostile nations will require the combined efforts of state election officials, our intelligence community and President Trump and his administration.”
Earlier this week, National Security Adviser John Bolton said that he’s warned Russian officials that meddling will not be tolerated. Rep. John Lewis, D-GA, said that’s not enough.
“I think it’s important for the President to say something,” Lewis said. “He must speak out about what the Russians are doing, what they’ve done in the past will not be tolerated by the American government.”
Krishnamoorthi and Lewis are the co-sponsors of the Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would force the Department of Justice to review election laws in states with recent histories of voter discrimination.
