Raja Endorsed by National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare
Calls Krishnamoorthi “the only candidate who will be a reliable, progressive voice” to protect these programs
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., (January 19, 2016) — U.S. House Democratic candidate Raja Krishnammoorthi today received the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM). The endorsement follows key recent labor union support of Raja from the Amalgamated Transit Union, the United Steelworkers, the Ironworkers, Machinists, and Airline Pilots unions. Recently endorsed by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, Raja is running to replace Rep. Tammy Duckworth to represent the 8th District of Illinois in Congress that includes the northwest Chicago suburbs.
“NCPSSM is proud to endorse Raja Krishnamoorthi for Congress in Illinois’ 8th District,” NCPSSM President Max Richtman said. “Raja is the only candidate who will be a reliable, progressive voice to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare in Congress.”
One of the most effective and trustworthy sources for Social Security and Medicare advocacy, NCPSSM has been advocating since 1982 on behalf of generations of older Americans wanting our nation’s two cornerstone health and income security programs to be secure for the future.
“Medicare and Social Security are two of the most important commitments we have pledged to our nation’s seniors, and I will fight in Congress to preserve and protect these programs,” Krishnamoorthi said. “Parents like mine and seniors across the country have earned their Social Security and Medicare. In Congress, I’ll make sure these vital programs are protected.”
A lifelong progressive, Raja is running for Congress to stand up to protect Social Security and Medicare and promote compassionate immigration reform, real action on climate change, equal pay for women, a more level playing field for the middle class, and common-sense gun laws.
The son of immigrants, Raja grew up in Illinois. After college and law school, he became policy director for Barack Obama’s successful U.S. Senate campaign. He also served as a founding prosecutor in Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s anti-corruption unit.
NCPSSM’s endorsement continues Raja’s strong momentum with less than two months left until the March 15 election. More than 100 leaders and organizations are endorsing Raja. Krishnamoorthi has earned the support of Former Senior Advisor to President Obama David Axelrod, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jan Schakowsky, along with the Illinois State Council of Machinists, Air Line Pilots Association, International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 2, OPEIU Local 45, and Illinois Letter Carriers President Ken Christy.
