Don Bacon co-sponsors Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi’s distracted driving resolution
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KMTV) – Congressman Don Bacon is taking steps at the federal level to raise awareness for distracted driving.
Bacon is co-sponsoring House Resolution 493 which aims to educate the public on distracted driving, find solutions to reduce fatal crashes, improve overall roadway safety and better enforce distracted driving laws and support the “It Can Wait” and “Road to Zero” campaigns.
In 2015, the National Safety Council reported that 47 percent of drivers felt it was safe to text or use voice-dictation while driving and 35 percent of teenagers use social media behind the wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says distracted driving is a problem for people of all ages but especially bad for younger drivers.
In 2015 alone, 3,400 people were killed and 390,000 were injured as a result of distracted driving.
In a letter read by his Assistant Chief of Staff Wednesday, Bacon said the statistics surrounding distracted driving were disheartening
The resolution was introduced in July of 2017 by Democratic Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi.
