Toni Preckwinkle Endorses Raja for Congress
Cook County Board President Backs Krishnamoorthi to Hold 8th District Seat
SCHAUMBURG, IL., (April 11, 2016) — Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is backing Raja Krishnamoorthi to succeed Tammy Duckworth in Congress for the 8th District of Illinois seat that includes northwestern and western Chicago suburbs.
“Raja will fight for working families in Congress by standing up for the middle class and standing against efforts by people like Donald Trump to divide our country,” Preckwinkle said. “Raja is the product of public schools and an independent thinker and problem solver who will bring fresh ideas to Washington to tackle the pressing problems facing Americans.”
Preckwinkle has been a community leader in the Chicago area for more than two decades where she has provided proven independent leadership based on a commitment to practical results. As Cook County Board President, Preckwinkle has worked to transform Cook County government, and she stood up to the city’s political machine when she previously served as Alderman in the City of Chicago.
“I look forward to working with Toni Preckwinkle to stand up for the middle class in Washington and push for policies that benefit working families throughout the northwestern and western Chicago suburbs of the 8th congressional district,” Krishnamoorthi said.
Raja emerged victorious from the March 15 Democratic primary on a platform of fighting to protect and strengthen the middle class. He won nearly 60 percent of the vote in a three-candidate race and has been endorsed by his two primary opponents, State Senator Mike Noland and Villa Park President Deb Bullwinkel.
The son of immigrants, Raja grew up in Illinois. After college and law school, he became issues director for Barack Obama’s successful U.S. Senate campaign. He also served as a founding prosecutor in Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s anti-corruption unit.
A lifelong progressive, Raja is running for Congress to stand up for real action on climate change, equal pay for women, and sane gun laws. He is committed to fighting attempts by the Republican Congress to cut the Social Security and Medicare benefits his parents and millions of other Americans rely on.
